Welcome home.

We believe that life should not be divided into working time and free time. When you're doing what you love every day, there's only one time: lifetime! That's why we develop technologies and services that help artists and labels spend more time doing the things they love. And this is how it all started...

2012

Streets, music and unfair deals

It all started in a buddy’s closet. Producing beats, burning our own first CDs, and printing covers on the CD’s. We dreamed of making it big.

We headed into the city with a ghetto blaster, our CD’s and sold them to people walking past. We managed to sell 2,000 copies in total! Such an epic moment and feeling.

We used the money to rent a studio and we kept on producing.

This time we went through a distributor, to make sure we’d go big, and all the stores have copies. At the end of it, none of the cash was left over. The label didn’t actually do anything, except deliver the CDs to the merchants on request. Our first biggest disappointment.

Take two. Founding our own label with distribution negotiating contracts with the distribution partners ourselves. Once again, there was barely anything left after this venture. Second disappointment.

This time round we thought we’d take it digital. Same thing, different day. The label did almost nothing, apart from upload the tracks and then walk away with most of our earnings. The third disappointment.

Nobody was transparent when it came to giving us the numbers. Nobody was interested in our success. Nobody wanted to support us. All they wanted was to cash in on our earnings.

Digital, 92% artist deals & the founding of iGroove

There’s nothing fun about the music business. At least not when it’s like that. They simply didn’t understand us.

What if we were to become the distributor? Release the music digitally, sell it, AND make sure our artists were getting the biggest share of their earnings (92%)? No hidden costs and on top of all that, totally transparent reporting!

iGroove was born.

We had our own online store, distribution was supported with all the big providers, and we were one of the first to make music available via text message (SMS).

“SMS downloads are changing the charts” is what the headlines read back then, after one of our artists made it to position 3 thanks to our SMS downloads. After that, every single artist wanted to have SMS downloads for their release.

Microsoft, Universal, Sony, Warner and many more wanted to be part of the story. Microsoft ended up flying us to Berlin, to help us scale our vision.

Hype, growth & artist advances

The word spread so quickly about iGroove that we were practically overrun with artists wanting to work with us. We had to cut back massively.

One thing we knew for sure: Music doesn’t just need distribution. It also needs support, promotion services, consultation and financing - and this is exactly what iGroove was providing at the time.

Our goal was to support each and every one of our artists to such an extent that they could develop their music business as much as possible.

We experienced first-hand how frustrated many successful artists were with the major labels. They found what they were looking for when they came to us: We let them keep their independence, increased supported, made fair deals, and we were down to earth.

This is how we were able to establish ourselves as an integral part of the music scene and we have moved well beyond the Deutschrap (German rap) genre that we started with.
